Why do dogs chew
Scratching, digging, rolling in mud, barking and chewing are common dog behaviors. Dogs are well loved pets. These loyal and loving animals have indeed made of lot of change to human lives. In spite of the dogs loyal and loving nature, an owner may think of abandoning the pet because of its unwanted behaviors. A dog’s chewing habit that has become destructive would naturally be a cause for concern. A pet owner that needs to replace the things destroyed by the dog would certainly be annoyed by the pet’s excessive chewing habit.
Chewing is innate in dogs. At three months, puppies would start chewing to try the strength of their teeth . Nature has not provided dogs with hands thus the mouth and the teeth are used by puppies to explore their environment . Chewing things is the only way by which puppies satisfy their curiosity about their new world . The propensity to chew worsens when the puppies start to teeth. A teether would strengthen the gums and ease a baby’s teething pains. Puppies that are not provided with chew toys would find their own teethers to manage their teething pains. This destructive chewing has other repercussions. A life threatening blockage can be an outcome of the dog’s indiscriminate chewing habit. The chewing habit of puppies can be managed as it would be an easy matter to confine a small dog and provide it with harmless chew toys. The tendency to chew is generally outgrown by most puppies.
An issue that concerns most pet owners is when a mature well behaved dog develops a destructive chewing habit. The dog’s unwanted behavior can be due to an underlying reason. Boredom, loneliness, inactivity are the most common causes of destructive chewing. Once you know why your dog chews. You must also know what to do when it chews. Dogs are one of the animals that crave interaction. A cat can satisfactorily exist lying around and being idle all day but not a dog. It is necessary for a dog to have someone to interact with. In spite the famed canine intelligence, dogs are expected not too know the value things. A dog pining for its master would be enticed by the shoe that has the master’s scent. A dog has to have outlets for the pent up energies. Confining the dog inside the home without toys or playmates would not be a good idea as the pet would find its own source of enjoyment.
