Stop The Mess When Housebreaking A Chihuahua Puppy

Posted under Chihuahua Madness by El Guapo on Tuesday 31 March 2009 at 12:08 pm

Housebreaking a puppy chihuahua needn’t be difficult

Housebreaking a Chihuahua puppy can be quite a challenge. Chihuahuas are famous for being difficult to house train at times. You see, just the small size of your puppy makes a difference. Very small dogs often can feel frightened and vulnerable. That’s a main reason your puppy may not even like to go outside. Here’s what you can do…
1. Wait.

Don’t start too soon. Make sure your puppy is capable of controlling elimination before you try. Otherwise you’re set up for frustration. Often about 12 weeks is the right age. Check with the breeder.
2. Remember… gentle.

Praise success. Punishing a puppy for accidents may be very confusing and can lead to aggressive behavior. Be careful how you react to problems.

3. Habits are useful.

Puppies eliminate shortly after eating and drinking. Just watch for signs and you can be ready to whisk your pup to the right spot. The other time to be on the lookout is after naps.

4. Think paper.

Use papers as the elimination spot if you can’t make it outside. After the papers become the spot to go, start moving the papers outside or wherever you choose.

5. The nest method.

Puppies don’t like to foul their nests. You can confine your puppy in a nest for short periods of time. That nest might be in a crate. Your part is to watch very closely for signs of elimination. At those signs, out goes the puppy. Do your part. You must monitor the puppy all the time the pup’s in the nest.

Wait until your puppy is old enough before you start puppy training. Then use just a few little tricks. With patience and time, your puppy should learn what’s expected and your problems are over.

Tips For Slimming Down An Overweight Chihuahua

Posted under Chihuahua Madness by El Guapo on Saturday 14 March 2009 at 10:03 pm

fat chihuahuaHave you ever seen an overweight Chihuahua? Unfortunately they aren’t hard to come by. But for such a little dog, why is there a problem with this breed tending to be overweight?

This is not something that is inherently born in them, but many of them tend to gain weight because their owners overfeed them. This is why it is important to be aware of how much you feed your Chihuahua.

The more weight that your Chihuahua gains, the less active they will become. Most Chihuahua owners do not realize the dangers of their dog being overweight. They just think of their little pooch as being fat and cute. The fact of the matter is that obese Chihuahuas are vulnerable to a variety of illnesses that are related to poor eating habits. These include serious issues such as diabetes and heart attacks. Therefore, it is important to slim down your pleasingly plump doggie.

How do you know if your Chihuahua needs to lose weight? The first thing you must do is to do a physical assessment on your dog. If you are not able to feel your their ribs when run your hands their its sides, or if you cannot feel the tail bones of your pooch, you know that something is amiss.

Once you’ve determined you have an overweight Chihuahua you should take them to the veterinarian to see about putting your pooch on a weight loss program. You should not only determine how long your dog should be on a weight loss program, but also what weight your Chihuahua should attain.

You have to begin by putting your Chihuahua on a well-balanced diet. That means it should be made up of carbohydrates, proteins, and vegetables. Your doggie’s diet should also be low on salt and sugar. Should you be feeding your dog table scraps? That would probably not be a good idea as it will only add to your dog’s waistline. Just do comparison shopping of different dog foods. There are some foods that contain fewer calories than just regular dog food. Therefore, your dog can still eat the same amount of food, but will be consuming fewer calories. If you are one of those dog owners who believe that it is better to prepare your dog’s food yourself, then you are going to have to reduce the portions that your dog will be eating. You should not cut the portions by more than 20% of the average size, as you want to take care not to starve your Chihuahua.

Just as it is important for people to exercise when on a weight loss program, Chihuahuas should too. It is advisable to take them on regular walks either in the park or around the block. Begin slowly at first, then gradually increase the speed and distance, as well as the amount of time you spend walking. It will not only do your doggie good, but the exercise will do you good as well. It is best for your Chihuahua to lose weight gradually. The slower it comes off, the less likely it is that it will return.

To best evaluate the progress that your Chihuahua is making with their weight loss program you should take them to your veterinarian.

With a healthy diet and the right kind of exercise, you will soon see the trim Chihuahua that you once had.

How To Help Your Fat Chihuahua Lose Weight

The first step to fef determining if your Chihuahua needs to lose weight is to do a physical check on them. Tell-tale signs include not being able to feel your Chihuahua’s ribs easily when you run your hands over his sides from the front to …

Teacup Chihuahua

Posted under Chihuahua Madness by El Guapo on Friday 13 March 2009 at 8:19 pm

teacup chihuahuasThere are many dog breeders out there, most especially Chihuahua breeders, who would object to the term of teacup Chihuahua. This is for the very reason that there really is no such thing as a teacup Chihuahua, at least not a separate breed.

There can be even smaller versions of the Chihuahua that might very well fit the various descriptions of tiny, toy, miniature or teacup Chihuahua. Chihuahua’s being small by nature however some people capitalize on this fact, especially when there is an especially small puppy in a litter, to label it as a teacup Chihuahua or a toy Chihuahua or a miniature Chihuahua to sell it for a higher price.

Unsuspecting people who are looking for a Chihuahua puppy as a pet will most likely be taken in by such ill-used words as toy or teacup Chihuahua, and buy the Chihuahua for more than they should. Prospective Chihuahua owners should do their homework and find out all there is to know about Chihuahua’s before they start to look around.

If on the other hand, you know a thing or two about dogs and Chihuahua’s in general, and you’re looking especially for a smaller ‘teacup Chihuahua’ then the label shouldn’t be a problem for you, as long as you know what you’re getting.

A Chihuahua, is a Chihuahua, is a Chihuahua, and whether it has been labeled as a teacup Chihuahua or not, it will still have the same characteristics. How it was bred, whether it is a purebred, and the size of it do come into the equation, but not all the time, and not all at once.

For one thing, if you’re getting your Chihuahua from a reputable Chihuahua breeder, then you will not have to worry about haggling the price down to something manageable just because you were told that you were getting a teacup Chihuahua.

Going through a reputable breeder also means that you have less to worry on the conditions of how the Chihuahua puppy was bred, and what illnesses or genetic diseases it might have. The Chihuahua breeder will have all the information that you need.

You will also find that going through a reputable Chihuahua breeder also has better advantages than just those mentioned. For instance you will also be able to get the advice necessary on how to properly raise your Chihuahua, and if you have a small ‘teacup Chihuahua’ then you can also get help and advice on how to handle this seemingly fragile little dog.

And as long as you know that your teacup Chihuahua is not a different breed of Chihuahua but only a smaller version, you (and your Chihuahua) will get along famously.
